Natural Flea Control
Natural Flea Control for Cats – Home Remedies That Work
Author: Deborah Gewock
Is your cat suffering with fleas? If you are reading this now, then my guess is yes. Getting rid of your pets fleas can be a challenge. Should you go to the veterinarian and get a prescription or maybe to the pet store and get an over-the-counter commercial product? Have you considered a home remedy that is not only safer, it is a whole lot less expensive and more readily available?
There is a very good chance your cat will be plagued by fleas if she is an indoor/outdoor cat. The use of commercial flea products can have a toxic effect on your pet, as well as your children. Can you imagine your child petting the kitty and then rubbing her eyes or putting her fingers in her mouth? You do not even want to think about what the effects could be to your child. These commercial products are full of toxic chemicals than can have short-term and long-term side effects.
There are natural alternatives so why not consider them? One good treatment is a mixture of garlic and brewers yeast. The fleas are repelled by the smell and taste of your pets’ skin. Those nasty varmints will be fighting each other to be the first to get off your pet. Be sure to cook the garlic thoroughly before mixing it with the brewers yeast because raw garlic can be toxic to your animal. Just put about a teaspoon of the mixture in her food and she will be flea free in no time. Because this is a natural remedy, you will want to continue the treatment until the fleas are gone. I have a friend with many indoor/outdoor cats and she has made this remedy a regular additive to their diet.
A second natural flea remedy is apple cider. Put a little bit in your pets water and the smell and taste of their skin will force the fleas to flee.
Fleas are a miserable pest to your cat. The itching and scratching can drive them crazy. Some cats actually have an allergy to fleas. So why not go natural and help your cat be free of fleas.
I have not always made the right decisions in regards to treating my pets’ ailments, but I am educating myself so that she will have a healthy life. Even veterinarians are starting to recommend natural home remedies and treatments because they know most commercial drugs have too many dangers and long-term side effects.

It has information on Diatomaceous Earth – an all natural product that a vet recommended I use when my father had been diagnoised with cancer, and they didn’t want him to be exposed to any chemicals – and yes, my cat brought in some fleas. You can get it at most local health food stores, and it’s cheap. It works great, I still swear by it today, and I have in my home right now 4 dogs, 5 cats and no fleas!
It does work the garlic stays in the dogs system, fleas and ticks do not tolerate garlic at all…….that’s why you will see no fleas or ticks on dogs that on are Brewers Yeast with Garlic, and the tablets are better, as some dogs will take it in powder form.
In the long run, yes it does work, this is all I have used on all of my dogs for the past 11-12 years, no health issues with it and side effects due to pesticides or chemicals from flea treatments…..
Long run, it does repel and will work as long as you keep your dog on their daily doses…I give the dose in half in am and half in pm, you give according to the weight size of the dog and it will tell you on the bottle how to give and how many…..
The dogs take them right down, over the years never had one dog that refused to take them……they do work and no chemicals to worry about.
I know lots of dog owners that use them, I mean more than a few but lots……and it all works for them as well……and no side effects at all.
It is my preference and people galore are starting to use them as well, not just a few…..due to dogs having allergic reactions to the flea controls on the market now, like frontline, advantix, advantage, chemicals…..
But, again they do work for dogs everywhere, I prefer not to give to dogs, I never have, have seen too many dogs with hair loss, allergies, skin reactions so bad, poor babies…..
But, like anything, they can be allergic to anything….and like anything else, before starting dogs on anything new, consult your vet.
this is an opinion, and not meant to be medical forum solution to flea and tick control….but is my opinion, that it works better than chemicals…
good luck
Fleas can be extremely difficult to kill and the longer your cats have them the unhealthier your cats are getting. Just because a product is natural doesn’t mean it’s safe – for example, essential oils are potentially toxic to cats and can cause permenant liver damage. Please invest in some Frontlne Plus (kills adults fleas, eggs, and larvae) and do plenty of house cleaning. Fleas spend only a fraction of their time on their host and many fleas of all life stages can be found around the house. Focus on areas where the cats spend a lot of time, such as where they sleep. Vacuum your house very frequently and dispose of the vacuum bags so the fleas don’t have a chace to get out.
What is the most natural flea control that really works?
what is the best for natural flea control for pets?
i have a dog and a cat,,, have tried the pesticide products, that still isnt solving the problem,,,, plus i am concerned about using them
Any ideas on natural flea control i.e. herbs and oils?
I have four cats and I have used powders, collars and garlic but still have not been able to free my cats of their fleas for very long. I feel very sorry for them as their fur is bitty when I brush it.
I use aromatherapy oils on the carpets. I have made my own collars with lemon grass on I really thought this was the oil I neede to use. I have had cats for many years but only ever had two or three cats.
How does natural flea control work? With garlic & brewers yeast?
