Most pet owners have learned that having to control fleas is just part of the territory when you have a pet, but with all of the different options available when it comes to doing this, it can get confusing as to what you need to use.

Many mainstream products that are advertised to kill fleas and ticks really do the job, but they do it at the expense of your pet's health. When you get right down to it, most are basically chemical pesticides, which is something that you don't really want on your pet or on you. Both cats and dogs have been known to have severe reactions to these products, including the following symptoms: dizziness, drowsiness, lethargy, skin burns, hair loss, itching, inflammation, and neurological reactions, including seizures.

Many pet owners have posted on various forums that they should have done research into the products before using them on their pets and express anger because the manufacturers act like there is nothing wrong with their products.

A natural solution is the key to getting rid of fleas and ticks without exposing your pet to harmful chemicals that cause these dangerous side effects.

Try to keep in mind the fact that out of every 100 fleas, only 10 live on your dog. The other 90 live in your house! If you want to keep the fleas off of your dog, keeping them out of your house is the first step and this can be done by vacuuming your carpets on a regular basis and treating them with a flea powder. Keeping a clean house will help deter fleas from setting up their base a lot more than you might think.

If you don't want to put anything on your dog, spreading a bag of lime around your yard will help keep fleas away from your home. Make sure it's garden lime, not hydrated or dry lime, though. This will dehydrate fleas and their eggs and will make sure your yard will stay flea free for about a month, depending on how much it rains where you live.

Another way to help keep your pet flea free is to keep them bathed regularly. Some people even swear by certain brands of dish soap!

We all want to do what's best for our pets and having access to natural methods of taking care of them is something we should all be thankful for.

Dogs and in general all pets tend to spend more of their summer time outdoors. In case of dogs, it is very important to be careful about parasites, bugs and micro organisms that can harm them while they get their whiff of fresh air. Precautions are necessary to keep these dangers away. One of these pests that can cause a lot of nuisance and damage are the ticks dog diseases. Avoiding the ticks is of prime importance than curing at a later stage.

Why Ticks?

Ticks tend to stick to warmer temperatures, CO2 and movement. Ticks do not transmit through the air. Their motion is limited to crawling. They transmit themselves by climbing up taller structures or plants and drop onto any living and moving human or animal. The danger of diseases or kinds of diseases transmitted by ticks depends upon the country and culture, therefore the cure of after effects of ticks and ticks itself varies from country to country. The danger of having ticks on your dogs body begins once the tick bites. The bite itself is painless and unfeeling but the place of bite might get infected in no time. Consulting a veterinarian is advisable for treatment which normally involves oral antibiotics. If your pet dog is diseased due to a tick bite, there is a risk of infection spreading due to your dog salivation on or biting another pet. The most popular disease spread by a tick bite is the lyme disease but not the only one.

How to keep ticks away from your pet dog

The best way to avoid ticks is to avoid walking your dog in the midst of vegetation during tick season. Always keep the vegetation around your house trimmed. Certain preventive medication products are also available. More information can be gathered from your veterinarian about suitability of these to your dog in respect to age and area. Do not use medications without consulting and proper instructions must be followed in using this kind of medication. Please remember that these medications are suited for a single class of pets only, meaning that tick prevention medication for dogs is for dogs only and should not be used on cats or any other pets.

Removing Dog Ticks

When your dog comes back from outdoors make sure to check him carefully for ticks. They are normally found in warm areas, under the arms, in the ears, between the toes and in the folds of the skin. If you find any, remove them safely. Do not touch the tick, use a alcohol swab, then pull it up slowly with tweezers. Make sure not to leave any parts of the tick sticking to your dog. If you are unsuccessful contact your vet.

A wrapping of fur is not all there is to your dogs skin. It is also a factory for vitamin D production, it protects the internal parts from injury, bacteria, and viruses, and it contains a sensory system that is unsurpassed. The network of skin nerve cells goes to work when your dog is cold, has a cut, or receives a pat on the heat. In cold weather, the hairs stand erect and form air pockets that insulate against the cold.

Healthy skin and hair coats are flexible, glossy, and free of excessive oiliness, redness, dandruff, scabs, eruptions, or parasites. Run you hand against the hair coat and check for growths or blemishes. There should also be no areas of hair loss. Each dog has its own shedding cycle, which may change from year to year. Some pets shed a small amount all the time, while others lose large clumps at various levels.

Pets can have freckles, concentrations of cells containing the brown pigment called melanin. These can be found anywhere on the skin and even in the mouth. Be sure to check the skin’s special alterations, the mammary glands, the foot pads, the claws, and whiskers.

Frequently check your dogs paws. The thick, pigmented, tough footpads are excellent shock absorbers. The pads are named for their location. Pets have sweat glands in the footpad area. If your dog gets excited at the veterinarians office, you may see sweaty paw prints on the exam table. Check the spaces between the toes. Since your dog walks barefoot and this is a very moist area, the interdigital area can be easily irritated and infected by briars, stones, foxtail, sand, and salt.

Your dogs whiskers or tactile hairs as some veterinarians refer to them, are long, stiff hairs located on the muzzle, upper eyelids, cheeks, and legs. They are used as feelers and are especially handy for navigation at night or in dark areas. There is a fable belief that a dogs sense of balance will be lessened if the whiskers are cut or shortened, but there is no truth to this at all. If any unusual changes or defects are found on your pet, do not hesitate to take him to the veterinarian, as changes can indicate an internal illness or parasite.

As a dog owner you will quickly notice that there are literally hundreds of businesses rivaling for the market share of dog shampoo. They are continually coming up with fresh ways of cleaning and washing your dog. It is therefore not very surprising to have infinite choices of dog shampoo available, and choosing the right one for your dog might be a very tricky task. This article will give you helpful information on selecting the best dog shampoo for your dog.

Dog shampoos are vital in order to uphold the health and well being of your dog concerning their cleanliness. Some dogs are especially fond of playing in the mud or anything else that will make them unclean. You would probably want to know how you can go about selecting the best dog shampoo when there are so many choices available on the market.

There are a great variety of dog shampoos on the market, all from different providers that are especially formulated for different situations and different coat types. Some of this available dog shampoo on the market is aromatherapy and calming shampoos, dry shampoos, anti-tangling shampoos, natural shampoos, flea shampoos and even conditioning shampoos. If your dog tends to have problems with a coat that tangles easily because of the length of the hair, anti-tangling shampoo will make your task of washing your dog a lot easier. Your dog will also be a lot happier and cleaner in the future.

The idea behind flea shampoo is pretty obvious, and it should only be used when your dog has fleas. By using a flea shampoo as a preventative will not get rid of fleas for a long time or even the fleas around the house. Flea shampoo should therefore only be used when it is absolutely necessary.

Above and beyond the ordinary dog shampoos that are available on the market, there are also other useful and helpful dog shampoos especially for dog that are very timid of easily scared. The dry spray shampoo would be ideal for these dogs, but you should know that they do not clean your dog as good as a normal dog shampoo would do. But they are still better than nothing, and will work well in situations when a cleaning spray is required.

If the use of these dry shampoos can be avoided, you should try and avoid it. But if your dog is absolutely horrified of water, this might be the only alternative other than having a stinking house.

There is a difference of opinion among canine experts as to whether bones should be given to a dog raw, cooked, hard, or soft, and even whether they should be given at all. On one point, however, there is total agreement, never give a dog splintering bones from chicken, pork, fowl, and rabbit, (although chicken bones that have been cooked in a pressure cooker until they are very soft can be quite nourishing and safe).

A marrow bone is the traditional symbol of a treat for a dog, and he obviously appreciates it. It may be too big and hard for small dogs. In fact, large breeds generally handle bones much better than small ones. Bones that are mostly cartilage, such as spinal and shoulder bones of veal, knuckle bones, and soft rib bones, are good chewing material that can be entirely consumed.

The real danger is intestinal compaction, especially in small dogs, if the masticated bone has not been mixed with other residue in the dog's stomach. A small amount should cause no trouble if it is given right after a meal. Chop and steak bones are more dangerous. Careful eaters simply clean off the meat and fat, but greedy gobblers run the risk of internal injury from jagged bone splinters. The same is true of a leg of lamb bone.

What is the best policy to follow with a dog of your own? A teething puppy between four and six months of age should always have a bone, real or imitation, to chew on. You might give an adult dog a suitable bone as on occasional treat - for example, once a week. It will give him enormous pleasure, will help to keep his teeth clean and free from tartar, and will occupy him for several hours. But a nylon bone offers the same advantages without the risk!

Unfortunately, blood-sucking mosquitoes don't only pray on human flesh, but also attack our dear defenseless dogs (who don't have the luxury of spraying repellant on themselves as humans do!) I'll tell you how you can prevent these bites and also what you can do to prevent these tiny vampires from attacking in the future.

CAUSES

Dog mosquito bites are caused by pesky little mosquitoes feasting on a dog's skin. Dogs are not as easy a target as humans as far as mosquitoes are concerned, but once a mosquito bites a dog, it can be a very unpleasant experience for the pooch. Another difference with humans is that dogs usually have a hard time swatting or driving mosquitoes away because of their limited range of vision and limited reach of their legs and tails, their only appendages that can be used to shoo mosquitoes away.

SYMPTOMS

Dog mosquito bites don't usually pose a big threat to a dog's skin health unlike, say, ticks and fleas. However, a lot of mosquito bites can certainly make your dog uneasy. Mosquito attacks on your dog can make them disoriented, sick, and can affect their breathing and moving. If this happens, a veterinarian could certainly come in handy to give relief to the itchiness your dog is certainly feeling. Otherwise, if the dog seems fine and is just showing discomfort, observe its situation for 24 hours.

SOLUTION

Remember that mosquitoes are known carriers of heartworm. Heartworms, when transmitted by mosquitoes to dogs, can cause major health concerns to the latter by causing illness in the dog's cardiovascular system. Thus, it is essential not to just avoid mosquitoes; it is also needed to avoid heartworms. Medicate your dog with a product that prevents heartworm infection.

I also recommend you check out products that naturally help to clear up mosquito bites by working with your dog's immune system. Some of these products will also help to relieve the scratching and itching that results from the bites.

PREVENTION

To help your dog avoid being bitten and attacked by mosquitoes, it is important to empty any stagnant sources of water. Stationary water is where mosquitoes thrive, and if a dog stays near places with stagnant water, mosquitoes bites are almost certain to occur.

Keep your dog away from areas with ditches, ponds, and even puddles. Water dishes and containers holding water should be covered always. Water in them should also be replaced or emptied every other day. Before you forget, make sure the water in dog dishes stays clean and is replaced as many times as possible.

Also, try to keep your dog inside your house, especially during dusk and dawn. These times are usually the times that mosquitoes are most active. Thus, keeping your dog indoors, where it is presumably mosquito-free, will save your precious pooch from mosquito bites and also from possible heartworm complications.

As with humans, you may also use repellants for your dogs. There are actually repellants made for dogs to stop skin attacks by fleas and ticks. Some of these repellants also work in preventing dog mosquito bites. A word of caution though - avoid products that contain DEET and essential oils. Not only are they not effective for animals, they may actually cause worse problems for the dog's health. There are also supplements that a dog can take to boost his skin's health even after being bitten by mosquitoes. Yeast, vitamin supplements, and fresh garlic have been known to be effective resistance builders among dogs.

Ear infection, no matter how mild, requires a veterinarian's attention. While some infections can possibly heal on its own, the vet should always be consulted so that the right treatment therapy is provided to your pets. The cure of dog ear infection should start the moment it is diagnosed. Otherwise, the condition may worsen. Ear infection is one health concern that all dog owners should be well-informed about because of its high number of noted cases.

There are different types of dog ear infection– the outer, middle, and inner ear infections. The primary symptoms of this disease are foul-smelling wax discharges, swelling, redness, pain, and inflammation. Oftentimes, the cases of inner and middle ear infections are a lot harder to treat than that of outer ear infections.

If your dog is suffering from this health concern, you will find it shaking or cocking its head frequently and at an unusual angle. It may also rub its ear incessantly because of irritation. In worse cases, dogs would develop balance problems and hearing impairment due to the disease.

There are different reasons why ear infection in dogs develops. Sometimes, it is due to bacterial and yeasts finding its way in the dog's ears. Mites may cause this disease as well. So if your dog has some parasites, be sure that you do what it takes to eliminate them from your pet's body. Allergies, underlying diseases, and foreign objects may trigger the problem as well.

If your dog is suffering from ear infection, anti-bacterial medications and ear drops are usually the foremost cures. However, it is strongly advised that you don't just buy over-the-counter medications as they may not necessarily help your pets. Instead, talk to the vet, ask for a prescription, and follow his advice.

For milder cases of ear infection, there are home remedies that you can use to help alleviate the discomfort that your dog goes through. Sometimes, it is necessary to provide your dog with both the medicines prescribed by the vet and the remedies found around the house to achieve fast relief from ear infections.

But more than treatment, dog owners should be more concerned on how to prevent ear infections. Regular grooming and proper hygiene can help a lot. For as long as you know how to take care of your pets properly, infections and all types of diseases shouldn't be a concern for you.

If left untreated, ear infection could pave the way to a host of complex health concerns for your dog. Aside from deafness, your dog can develop tumors and diseases that are hard to treat. The bottom line is that simple ear infection can develop into diseases with complications are next to impossible to reverse. And these diseases shouldn't have occurred in your beloved pets, if you were only there to give them the necessary medical attention.

So the next time you see your pets irritable, scratching its ears often, and has abnormally high ear wax excretion, better be ready for an appointment with the vet. Keeping your dog's health problems at minimum could help both of you greatly in the long run.

Although it's often overlooked, grooming is an important part of your dog's health and wellness program. Here are some of the most frequently asked dog grooming questions our experts at PetPlace.com are asked by their 600,000 visitors per month:

1. When should I start grooming my dog?

Start regular grooming when you first bring your dog home and make it a part of his or her routine. Purchase a good-quality brush and comb and get your dog used to being handled. Praise your dog when he or she holds still and soon he or she will come to enjoy the extra attention. Some breeds have special grooming needs, so ask your vet or a professional groomer for advice on particular grooming equipment necessary for your particular dog.

2. How often should I brush my dog’s hair?

Routine brushing and combing removes dead hair and dirt and prevents matting, while giving your pet a healthier and shinier coat.

Your dog's skin and hair coat reflects his or her overall health and nutritional status. Many dogs maintain a healthy skin and hair coat with minimal assistance. Some long-haired or curly-haired breeds require regular brushing. For most dogs, a good brushing once or twice a week will do the trick.

3. How often should I bathe my dog?

Your dog’s need for bathing depends on its breed, the skin type and hair coat. It also depends on the owner’s preference and how dirty your dog gets. Bathing your dog every month or two isn't unreasonable, but some dogs will need more frequent cleanings. A good rule of thumb is to bathe your pet only when the coat gets dirty or begins to smell “doggy.”

When bathing your dog, make sure to rinse all the soap out of the coat. If there are persistent problems with scratching or flaky skin, he or she may need a special medicated shampoo or have a skin problem that your veterinarian should examine.

4. What skin problems are common among dogs and what should I look for?

Skin problems – including fleas, ticks and mites or allergies and infections – are common among dogs. Most conditions are manageable with early detection and treatment. If you notice excessive scratching, hair loss or flaky skin, contact your veterinarian. If your pet is continuously exposed to fleas and ticks, speak to your veterinarian about products to minimize the parasite’s impact on your dog’s skin. Remember that consistently poor hair coat with lots of skin flaking may indicate a deeper medical problem.

5. I have problems cleaning my dog’s ears. What’s the best way to clean his ears and how often should it be cleaned.

Ears also require cleaning, especially in dogs with oily skin or allergies. This is a delicate task and is probably best left to your vet. However, if your dog is easy to handle (and there is no chance that you will be bitten), you can learn to do this chore yourself. To remove excessive wax and debris from the ears, consider an ear cleaning every two to four weeks. Ask your veterinarian about products you can use at home, and be sure to ask for a demonstration of proper ear cleaning techniques.

6. I have problems keeping my dog still so I can trim its nails. Do you have any nail trimming advice?

While clipping nails is a painless and simple process, it takes practice and patience to master the skill. When you muster enough courage to trim the nails of your dog, you’ll need a good nail clipper, a nail file to rub any sharp edge away and a styptic stick to stop any subsequent bleeding easily.

Ask your vet to show you the correct technique, and then get started by getting your pet used to having his or her paws handled. Once you start using the clippers, go slowly. Try clipping just a few nails in one sitting. Maintain a regular schedule and be persistent. Your pet will eventually develop patience and learn to cooperate.

7. What is the most important thing to include in my dog grooming kit?

Training a winning dog sled racer goes beyond endurance and strength. Just like a professional athlete, every facet of life from diet to housing needs to be fine-tuned to the goal of optimum health and athletic ability. Learn how to train a winning sled racing dog with these top tips from champion trainers.

1. Start with a good diet.

Again, just like a professional athlete, your champion dog needs a champion diet to win. Purchase high-protein food that’s specially made for active canines. You also want to make sure that your dog has some good fats and omega fatty acids in his diet. Working dogs like Huskies and Malamutes burn a lot of energy, and health fats are an enduring fuel.

And remember, just as a professional athlete wouldn’t cheat with cheeseburgers and milkshakes, don’t jeopardize your dog’s chances of winning with table scraps and extra treats.

2. Follow a regular training schedule.

Train your dogs regularly and consistently. Pick a time of day to do practice runs and stick with it. Your dog will get comfortable in the routine and be more willing, while looking forward to his daily run even if you aren’t.

Another area where scheduling can be very important is when it comes to bathroom breaks. Train your dogs to only take breaks at specified times. If your dogs know that every two hours you will stop for a short break, they’ll become adjusted to that routine and less likely to veer off at a key moment. Once you pick a break schedule, stick with it.

3. Keep your dogs and their housing hygienic.

Disease can spread fast on a sled team, so hygiene is of utmost importance. Wash your dog’s regularly and make sure you provide them with clean and dry bedding. You also want to regularly clean their kennel thoroughly.

Regularly wash out their runs, individual kennels, feeding bowls, drinking areas and training gear.

4. Provide lots of water, especially in the summer.

Dogs need water. Working dogs need a lot of water. Make sure your animals have a good supply of clean drinking water. If you live in a climate that gets hot in the summer, be sure to up the supply during the warm months. Many working dogs are used to a colder climate and will need a lot of shade and water to survive the heat.

After a run, or during breaks on a long run, make sure your dog is well hydrated.

5. Don't let them be distracted by annoying pests.

Dogs and fleas have a way of finding each other. When a dog experiences flea bites on a routine basis, they can distract his focus and turn his attention to scratching relief. Flea and tick collars can be helpful, but if you notice your dog spending an inordinate amount of time digging, scratching and licking himself, visit a veteranarian for assistance.

6. Buy from a trusted breeder.

To avoid genetic diseases or health problems, be sure to purchase your racers from a trusted and referred breeder. For advice, ask your veterinarian or consult your local breed association.
